the Depths of Artistry

Let’s take a closer look at the visual art practice of Raveendran Valapad, where he blends traditional art knowledge to create a new and fascinating paradigm. Coming from a lineage of Kerala traditional goldsmiths, Raveendran paved his path as a self-taught artist, pioneering the art form known as Cancuperik – a seamless fusion of ancient wisdom and contemporary ingenuity.
Raveendran’s artistic tapestry is a dedication to confronting environmental emergencies and personal turmoil. His mixed media masterpieces, embellished with delicately embossed copper plates, invite the viewer into a realm. Raveendran emerges as a catalyst for igniting conversations about the complex interrelationship between humanity and nature. Each brushstroke and copper embellishment serves as a testament to the chemistry of art.
Freed from the constraints of traditional media, Raveendran seamlessly blends three-dimensional copper embossments into his canvases. This union of form and structure invites viewers to delve deeper into the complex layers of his work of art beyond the limits of visual perception.
Raveendran’s multifaceted artworks serve as a reflective mirror of the complexities of human experience. Through each work of art, he challenges us to rethink the spectrum of artistic expression and embrace the boundless beauty of the unknown.

Since 2015, Raveendran Valapad has embarked on a fascinating artistic journey, delving into the magical realm of Cancuperik’s painting style that seamlessly marries the vibrancy of acrylic colors with the richness of copper. Inspired by his cultural heritage and deep-rooted passion for innovation, Raveendran’s artistic process is as complex as it is fascinating.
The composition begins in Cancuperik style with the preparation of copper sheets in the central part of the canvas, where Raveendran divides the surface into diamond-shaped sections. This painstaking process is the foundation upon which his artistic vision unfolds, creating a dynamic canvas that invites viewers to explore its depths.
When Raveendran’s brush meets the canvas, he imbues his female ‘mother’ forms with a profound sense of three-dimensionality, breathing life into their forms through light and shadow. The essence of mixed media is artistically expressed as layers of paint are delicately applied to the canvas, adding depth and complexity to the narrative each stroke weaves.
Intricate craft motifs inspired by traditional handicrafts are also etched with great precision on the copper plates, adding another layer of texture and meaning to Raveendran’s creations. With careful consideration of the principles of sustainable balance from physics, triangular dividers create harmony and balance in every composition.
The combination of copper plating with acrylic paint not only adds a kaleidoscope of colors but also protects the artwork and ensures its longevity and durability.
Raveendran’s studio, the Cancuperik Center, produces paintings that evoke a deep sense of spirituality through the deft use of materials and techniques. These paintings are a lasting testament to Raveendran’s artistry and unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of Cancuperik-style painting.
